An older term coined by clinicians for a person whose gender identity is inconsistent with their assigned sex and who desires to permanently transition to the sex or gender with which they identify. This can involve hormone replacement therapy (HRT), genital reconstruction surgery (GRS), top surgery (removal or augmentation of breasts), permanent facial and another hair removal, and/or other medical treatments.[3]
