Pre-, Post-, or Non-Operative (or -Op)

The terms used to describe the surgery status of a transgender person. Pre-Op means that a person has not had gender-affirming surgery (see Gender-Affirming Surgery) and may or may not plan to. Post-Op means that an individual has had gender-affirming surgery. Non-Op means that a person does not plan to have gender-affirming surgery. The choice to have gender-affirming surgery is highly personal and does not affect the validity of a person’s gender identity. Refrain from discussing a trans person’s surgical history or future unless they bring up the topic.[2]
